Science Museum Visits South

Earlier this month, the 3rd and 4th graders at WCA South Elementary were visited by a representative from the Science Museum of Minnesota. The presentation was sponsored by Ottertail Power Company and focused on energy forms and conservation. Students investigated renewable and non-renewable energy and learned more about the main energy sources in our area. Several students acted out the process of harnessing wind power, mining coal, and using nuclear energy. The demonstrations showed where these different forms of energy come from and waste that may be left behind.
Students were able to reflect on their own energy use and determine ways they could conserve energy in their own homes. The presenter provided examples such as turning off lights when you leave a room, unplugging unused electronics, and taking shorter showers. At the end of the presentation, each student was able to ride an "energy bike" and use their energy to power three types of light bulbs.
Our students enjoyed this hands-on opportunity to learn more about the energy they use every day!
